The Situation

Passage Key Dolphin Tours is a private water tour operator serving the Anna Maria Island and Sarasota areas on Florida's Gulf Coast. The documented phases of this campaign began in May 2025, following earlier foundational SEO work that established the site's technical baseline and initial organic presence.

The goal entering the documented period was to convert growing organic traffic into more paying customers: improving commercial page performance, strengthening the blog's ability to route high-intent visitors toward tour pages, expanding local search visibility across two distinct Gulf Coast markets (Bradenton and Sarasota), and progressively pushing priority keywords into the top 3 ranking positions.

The Work

How We Got There

The campaign was structured across five phases. Click any phase to expand the details.

Phase 1
Technical Foundation, Content, and Commercial Page CRO
May – June 2025
Goal: Increase revenue by improving conversion performance across commercial pages and expanding organic visibility through content, technical fixes, and link building.
May: Technical Cleanup, Content Expansion, and CRO

A full Screaming Frog audit identified and resolved existing technical issues across the site: 404 pages, missing meta tags on blog posts, missing H1 tags, pages with more than four levels of crawl depth, broken internal links, and keyword cannibalization between main target pages. All issues were fixed and the site was re-crawled to confirm resolution.

Blog content was expanded targeting early and mid-funnel queries with real search demand to improve visibility and bring more sessions to the site. Mid-performing pages sitting in positions 4 to 10 were also reviewed using GSC data, focusing on high-impression, low-CTR queries where improved on-page relevance could push them higher without new content.

All commercial pages were audited for intent and content alignment, with updates to strengthen above-the-fold sections: clearer value propositions relative to competitors, stronger social proof placements, and more strategic CTA positioning. Suggested design changes were documented for implementation with the designer. Each commercial page was also evaluated for topical cluster depth, with the goal of having at least five supporting content pieces interlinked to each page, with those supporting assets cross-linked to each other to form a complete cluster. A GA4 funnel exploration was set up to monitor conversion behavior after the CRO updates went live.

June: Linkable Content and Backlink Cleanup

New linkable content was created through a combination of competitor reverse-engineering, brainstorming on link-worthy topic ideas, and publishing resource pages designed to attract backlinks naturally and improve the site's overall backlink profile. The existing backlink profile was also reviewed and cleaned up to remove low-quality or toxic links that could suppress rankings.

Supporting keywords currently ranking in positions 2 to 15 were reviewed for intent alignment, with content updates made where the existing pages were not fully matching how users were searching. A data-driven SEO roadmap was drafted for Q3 using the performance data from May and June as the baseline.

Outcome A technically clean site, a commercial page set with stronger conversion messaging and cluster depth, a refreshed backlink profile, and a Q3 roadmap grounded in real performance data.
Phase 2
Local Expansion and Commercial Page Optimization
August – October 2025
Goal: Expand local search presence into the Sarasota market and optimize revamped commercial pages using the latest performance data.
August: Sarasota GBP Setup and Technical Audit

A new Sarasota Google Business Profile was set up and optimized alongside the existing Bradenton GBP, establishing local search presence across both Gulf Coast markets. The Sarasota landing page was optimized separately: main and supporting keywords were identified, then headers, the opening paragraph, and metadata were updated to align with local search intent for Sarasota-area visitors. A full site audit was run and critical technical issues were resolved, covering 404 errors, crawl depth, and duplicate content.

September: Snorkeling and Dolphin Tours Page Optimization

The revamped Snorkeling Adventure page and Dolphin Tours Adventure page were optimized using the latest GA4, GSC, and Semrush keyword data. Blog performance across the site was assessed to identify which posts were showing the strongest impressions, clicks, and rankings. The top three bottom-funnel blog posts were then linked to their most relevant commercial pages, connecting high-intent readers already close to a booking decision directly to the tour pages where they could act on that intent.

October: Sunset Cruise and Egmont Key Optimization

The revamped Sunset Cruise Adventure page and Egmont Key Tours Adventure page were optimized using the latest GA4, GSC, and Semrush data. The top-performing blog post was also identified and optimized for its most relevant search term, with the goal of pushing it higher in the SERPs to maximize organic traffic from that page.

Outcome Local search presence extended to a second Gulf Coast market, all four main commercial pages data-optimized for current search intent, and the blog-to-commercial link structure established for the top-performing bottom-funnel posts.
Phase 3
Blog Performance and Internal Link Development
November 2025 – January 2026
Goal: Push the highest-performing blog posts further up the rankings and strengthen internal linking between blog content and commercial tour pages.
November: Blog Optimization and Cross-Linking

The top two performing blog posts were optimized for their most relevant search terms to improve their ranking positions and maximize organic traffic from those pages. Related blog posts were interlinked to support topical authority across the blog, creating a more coherent cluster structure rather than a collection of isolated articles. A full site audit was run and critical technical issues were addressed.

December: Continued Blog Optimization

The top three performing blog posts were further optimized for their most relevant search terms, extending the blog ranking work from November. Internal linking between related blog posts continued, building out a connected cluster structure across the full blog archive.

January 2026: Commercial Page Link-Up and Performance Monitoring

Top-performing blog posts were identified using GSC data and given contextual internal links to priority commercial pages: dolphin tours, manatee tours, sunset cruises, and snorkeling tours. The focus was specifically on blog posts with strong impressions and top-10 rankings that were linking to pages with keywords sitting in positions 4 to 8, where passing existing authority could help move them into the top 3.

A GSC performance review found that many high-value dolphin, boat tour, and snorkeling keywords were ranking in positions 4 to 8 with strong impression volume, confirming near-term opportunity through intent reinforcement and improved SERP messaging. A cannibalization review across dolphin, manatee, and sunset tour pages confirmed clear intent separation with no meaningful keyword overlap affecting performance. GA4 analysis across key commercial pages showed high engagement and low bounce rates on the dolphin and manatee tour pages, indicating strong user intent, while the sunset cruise and snorkeling pages showed higher bounce rates and lower engagement, pointing to a need for clearer above-the-fold value propositions on those pages.

Outcome A blog archive with stronger rankings, a connected internal link structure, and a data-backed picture of exactly which commercial pages needed CRO attention going into Q1 2026.
Phase 4
Homepage CRO and Commercial Page Refinement
February – March 2026
Goal: Improve engagement and conversion potential on key commercial pages and publish new supporting content to reinforce high-potential keywords.
February: New Supporting Content and Homepage CRO

Two new supporting blog posts were published to strengthen high-intent tour keywords currently ranking in positions 4 to 10: an Anna Maria Island dolphin tour guide covering what to expect, typical pricing and tour length, best times to go, and practical planning details, and a Sarasota dolphin tour guide following the same structure. Each article was built to support its related service page without promotional framing, with natural internal links placed early in the content to pass relevance and guide readers toward next steps.

A homepage CRO refresh was developed to improve engagement and reduce booking friction. The hero section was restructured to lead with a clear benefit and location headline, with a USP subhead emphasizing private tours, maximum six guests, and luxury boat comfort. A trust strip was added presenting key differentiators at a glance: private tours, maximum six guests, shaded seating, onboard restroom, pickup options, and snorkel gear. "Most Popular Experiences" was repositioned directly after the trust strip with scannable tour cards showing starting prices to speed decision-making. A curated review module was moved higher on the page to build credibility before users reached long-form content. The overall goal was to get the site's strongest proof points in front of visitors at the exact moment they decide whether to book or leave.

March: Egmont Key and Snorkeling Page Revisions

The Egmont Key Tours page was revised to lead with the experience and destination value rather than pricing and logistics details. The headline was updated to communicate what makes Egmont Key unique: a remote, boat-access-only, uninhabited island with a distinct mix of history, snorkeling, and shelling. Icon-based highlights were added for history, snorkeling, shelling, and secluded island access to help visitors quickly understand what the tour offers and who it is for. The messaging was positioned to attract history enthusiasts and more experienced snorkelers looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience.

The Anna Maria Island Snorkeling Tours page was revised to shift the focus from "private small group" messaging to experience-level fit, making it clear that tours are suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. This change was designed to reduce drop-off from visitors who might have assumed the tour required prior snorkeling experience, and to help visitors identify the right tour for their skill level more quickly.

Outcome New supporting content strengthening two high-priority keyword clusters, a homepage rebuilt to convert at the top of the funnel, and commercial page messaging refined to better match visitor intent and reduce drop-off.
Phase 5
Local Entity Optimization and AI Overview Authority
April – June 2026
Goal: Maintain local visibility while implementing AI Overview optimization and strengthening local entity signals.
April: GBP Audit and Homepage Performance Review

A competitive GBP and on-page SEO audit compared Passage Key Dolphin Tours against three Anna Maria Island competitors (Anna Maria Island Dolphin Tours, Fun Boat Tours, and MV Minnow) for the target keyword "dolphin tour anna maria island," reviewing GBP profile data and each competitor's primary ranking page to identify gaps and prioritize actions for local search visibility. Core tour pages were also reviewed to confirm that service keywords, location references, and internal links were clearly present, with missing location references added where needed. GBP posting ran throughout the month targeting local keywords.

Homepage engagement rate and bounce rate data for March versus April was reviewed to assess the impact of the CRO updates that went live on April 6.

May: GBP Profile Optimization, Reviews, and Citations

Acting on the April audit findings, the GBP profile was updated with relevant secondary categories, a FareHarbor booking URL was added, and the business description was rewritten to better align with local search intent and service keywords. A review acquisition strategy was implemented targeting 3 to 5 new Google reviews with language referencing tour type, location, and experience highlights. All new reviews were responded to with natural references to services and locations. New citations or listing updates were submitted across major directories including TripAdvisor, Yelp, Apple Maps, and Bing Places, with NAP consistency checked and corrected across all platforms.

June: AI Overview Content Optimization

One existing blog post ranking in positions 5 to 15 was selected and restructured for AI Overview eligibility: clear answer sections were added under headings, bullet lists were introduced, a FAQ section was added, and heading structure was updated to align with search intent. Internal links from two to three high-traffic blog posts were added to relevant tour pages to strengthen the path from informational content to commercial pages. GBP posting continued throughout the month, with posts shared across social media channels.

Outcome A GBP profile optimized against direct local competitors, stronger review signals and citation consistency, and content restructured to be picked up by AI-generated search results as the local search landscape continues to evolve.

How the Work Connects to the Numbers

+54.7%
Overall Session Growth YoY
Session growth came from multiple directions working together: technical fixes removed crawlability blockers, blog content expansion added new entry points for early and mid-funnel searches, and the internal link work in Q4 2025 and January 2026 kept visitors moving from informational content to commercial pages once they arrived.
+30.7%
Revenue Growth YoY
Revenue growth reflected a combination of more qualified traffic and a stronger conversion experience on the tour pages. Commercial page CRO starting in May 2025, the homepage rebuild in February 2026, and the Egmont Key and Snorkeling page revisions in March 2026 all reduced friction and improved the clarity of the booking path for visitors who arrived with intent.
#3
for "Anna Maria Island"
Ranking #3 for a high-competition destination query like "Anna Maria Island" reflects the cumulative effect of the topical cluster work from Phase 1, the blog authority built in Phase 3, and the location-referenced content strategy maintained across GBP posts and page updates throughout the campaign. Destination queries like this drive high-volume awareness traffic that feeds the commercial funnel.

Key Takeaways

What Drove the Outcomes

Topical cluster depth was built from the start
One of the first structural goals in May 2025 was ensuring each commercial page had at least five supporting content pieces, all cross-linked to each other and to the pillar page. Building this cluster structure early gave Google a coherent picture of the site's expertise around each tour type, which made later blog optimization and ranking gains easier to sustain.
Two GBPs created a dual-market presence
Adding and optimizing a Sarasota GBP alongside the existing Bradenton profile in August 2025 extended local search coverage to a second distinct Gulf Coast visitor market. The two-GBP strategy meant the business could appear in local results for searches originating from both markets, not just the primary Anna Maria Island audience.
Blog posts served two different jobs at different stages
In Phase 3, blog posts were optimized specifically to improve their own rankings and capture more organic traffic. In Phase 4 and earlier in January 2026, those same posts were used as internal link sources to route readers toward commercial pages. Treating these as separate objectives, done in sequence, meant the blog was first made strong enough to drive traffic, then used as a channel to direct that traffic where it mattered.
CRO was driven by behavior data, not assumptions
The January 2026 GA4 review identified a specific contrast: dolphin and manatee tour pages had strong engagement and low bounce rates, while sunset cruise and snorkeling pages showed the opposite pattern. This data directly shaped the February and March CRO work, with the homepage refresh and page revisions targeting the exact friction points the behavioral data had flagged rather than applying changes uniformly across all pages.
